USYS Age Group Update - Fall 2026

What the national age group change means for Houston Surf families and how we're preparing

Supporting Players Through the Transition

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, U.S. Soccer's member organizations, including U.S. Club Soccer and U.S. Youth Soccer, will transition to an August 1–July 31 age group structure.

Houston Surf is fully aligned with these national standards and is committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for every player and family.

As always, our focus remains the same:

  • Player development

  • Clear communication

  • Thoughtful decision-making

  • Supporting every player through the transition

Why the Change?

The updated age group structure better aligns youth soccer with the traditional school calendar, allowing many players to compete alongside classmates and peers.

The change is intended to:

  • Keep players with their school peer groups

  • Improve long-term team continuity

  • Reduce scheduling conflicts

  • Better align player development throughout youth soccer

We're here to help.

What This Means for Houston Surf Families

Our coaching staff is carefully evaluating teams and communicating with families throughout the transition.

Every decision will continue to prioritize:

  • Long-term player development

  • Team continuity

  • Individual player needs

  • A positive experience for every family
